PUBLIC HEARING ON TRANSNATIONAL LABOR FLOWS AND COMMERCE SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY, MARCH 11, IN THE TEXAS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

AUSTIN– On Monday, March 11 at 10AM in room E1.014 of the Texas Capitol, the House Committee on International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs will hold a public hearing on the topic of Transnational Labor Flows and Commerce. It will consist of invited testimony only from the following immigration policy experts:

Norman Adams, Texans for Sensible Immigration Policy;

Eddie Aldrete, IBC Bank, Texas Employers for Immigration Reform;

Brad Bailey, Executive Director, The Texas Immigration Solution;

Elizabeth Cedillo-Pereira, Attorney in Immigration and Nationality Law;

Julieta Garibay, United We Dream;

Bill Hammond, President, Texas Association of Business;

Tamar Jacoby, President & CEO, ImmigrationWorks USA;

Peter Joseph, Executive Director, Association to Invest in the USA;

Pia Orrenius, Assistant Vice President, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; and

Gus Reyes, Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Collectively, we need to recognize that our current system is broken. All piecemeal attempts at reform over the last twenty-five years have failed to create the kind of rational and effective system we need to maintain competitiveness, whether in an industry like agriculture, which requires large numbers of workers to be able to perform physically demanding tasks, or in technology, where the demand for employees with advanced degrees in math and science is projected to outstrip supply by 2018.

We invite everyone to join us on Monday, whether it be in person, or via online broadcast which can be found through the Texas House of Representatives website. It is time that we discuss comprehensive immigration reform legislation, and en masse urge Congress to take action on the issue.
